It is early morning in a rural Akwa Ibom community. A farmer loads fresh produce onto a motorcycle and begins the journey to the nearest market. In the past, the trip was uncertain. A damaged road, an overflowing stream or a broken bridge could turn a short journey into hours of struggle.
Today, the motorcycle moves along a rehabilitated road. Children in clean uniforms walk towards a modern school. A pregnant woman receives attention at a nearby primary healthcare centre. The community is beginning to feel connected to the wider economy.
This scene captures the development journey of Akwa Ibom State under Governor Umo Eno.
The Past: A Promise of People-Centred Governance
When Governor Eno assumed office on May 29, 2023, he inherited a state with significant infrastructure and human development achievements. However, many rural communities still faced poor road connectivity, limited healthcare facilities, inadequate school infrastructure, unemployment and economic hardship.
His administration responded with the ARISE Agenda, built around agricultural revolution, rural development, infrastructure maintenance and advancement, security management, education and healthcare. The objective was clear. Development had to reach people in their communities, rather than remain concentrated in major urban centres.
The government began by listening. Through the Akwa Ibom Dialogue, citizens, professionals, traditional leaders, private-sector representatives and development experts contributed ideas to the administration’s blueprint.
The Present: Progress People Can See
Three years later, the promise is taking physical form.
Across the state, road construction has become one of the strongest features of the administration. New roads, inherited projects and rehabilitation works are opening communities, supporting commerce and improving movement across the state.
But progress is more than asphalt.
Imagine a child entering an ARISE Model Primary School for the first time. The classrooms are modern. The learning environment is safer. Teachers and pupils have facilities designed to support effective education.
In another community, a patient who once travelled a long distance for basic treatment can now receive care at a model primary healthcare centre. The administration has combined new health facilities with the renovation of existing hospitals and health centres.
For vulnerable families, compassionate homes have replaced unsafe structures. The initiative has given deserving citizens a renewed sense of dignity, security and belonging.
Farmers have received seedlings, inputs and support through agricultural programmes. Traders, young entrepreneurs and small businesses have benefited from grants and empowerment initiatives. Free food distribution and social intervention programmes have also provided relief to households facing economic pressure.
At Victor Attah International Airport, investments in aviation facilities, the smart terminal and airport operations are strengthening Akwa Ibom’s position as an emerging aviation and tourism centre.
The Future: Building Beyond Today
Now picture Akwa Ibom several years from today.
Rural roads connect farms to industries. Modern schools produce digitally skilled graduates. Improved healthcare raises the quality of life. Tourism facilities attract visitors, while aviation connects the state to more destinations. Agriculture supplies raw materials to processing companies, creating jobs across the value chain.
The administration’s emphasis on capital development, roads, healthcare, education and rural transformation reflects an attempt to move from immediate interventions to long-term economic positioning.
As the 2027 election approaches, Akwa Ibom people will have the responsibility of examining the administration’s record, the projects completed, the promises still being implemented and the long-term vision presented for the state. Their decision should rest on evidence, accountability, competence and the capacity of every candidate to advance the collective interest of the people.
Akwa Ibom’s journey is still unfolding. Challenges remain, and development will require continuity, accountability and citizen participation.
The past provided the foundation. The present is delivering visible interventions. The future holds the promise of a connected, productive and prosperous Akwa Ibom where progress reaches every community and every citizen.
